Description

Sainsbury's So Organic free range turkeys area slower grown bronze breed, specially selected for a tasty succulent meat, rich in flavour. The birds are free to roam on British farms that meet organic standards of welfare. The traditional bronze turkey breed has darker feathers, which when plucked may leave coloured marks on the skin. This is natural and these will not effect the quality and will reduce in appearance upon cooking. So Organic. In harmony with nature.

Cooking instructions

Oven cook from chilled. 180°C / Fan 150°C / Gas 4. 40 mins per kg plus 60 mins.
Refer to the weight label on the front of the bag for the specific roasting time. If freezing at home, defrost thoroughly in a refrigerator before cooking.

Before cooking: Leave the turkey out of the fridge to temper for one hour before cooking. Preheat oven. Remove all packaging except the foil tray. Place the turkey in a deep sided ovenproof roasting tin. Measure out 200ml of chicken or turkey stock (boiled water can be used instead) and pour into the foil around the turkey. Rub oil or melted butter all over the skin and season with salt and pepper (optional). Cover the turkey with foil and place in the centre of the preheated oven.

During cooking: Baste the turkey with the cooking juices and rotate the tray every 30 minutes. Remove the foil 45 minutes before the end of the cooking time, baste and return to the oven to allow the skin to become golden brown.

After cooking: Once cooked, remove the turkey crown from the oven, check food is piping hot, and no pink colour remains. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 30 mins before carving. All cooking appliances vary. This is a guide only.
To carve, remove the whole breast in one piece and slice.

Warnings

  • Don't wash raw turkey. Keep raw poultry separate from cooked foods.
    Use separate kitchen utensils and surfaces for raw poultry and cooked foods or wash them thoroughly in between use.
    Wash hands after handling raw poultry.
    Do not stuff the crown - the stuffing must be cooked separately.
    Always ensure product is piping hot throughout and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the deepest part of the breast.

Storage

For use by date: see front of pack.
Do not exceed the use by date.
Keep Refrigerated at <5°C.
Store uncooked meat covered and lower in the refrigerator than cooked meat.
Suitable for freezing. Once defrosted use within 24 hours. Do not re-freeze once defrosted.
Defrost instructions: Leave the turkey in the bag. Leave the turkey in the bag. Defrost thoroughly in a refrigerator on a deep dish or tray for 30 hours before cooking. Ensure the turkey crown is completely defrosted by checking there are no ice crystals in the cavity.
